“The MAPI call ‘OpenMsgStore’ failed with the following error:

The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.

The MAPI provider failed.

Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store

ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000”


Faced this problem on a machine this morning. There were no details in the Event Viewer under Application the first time round. Only the error pasted above was shown. Decided to reboot the server to see if it would work after that. After the reboot, more details started appearing in the Event Viewer. This time it said the information store had exceeded it’s size limit of 50GB. The total size was now on 51GB and it turns out once the size limit has been breached the server automatically dismounts the information store which is exactly why the whole company failed to connect to Exchange this morning. After the reboot though, even though the information store was over it’s limit, email functionality was restored. A value in a registry then had to be changed to increase the information store limit so it wouldn’t dismount the information store again.

Ensure the below registry key is not enabled

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem

50GB isn’t the default for every information store, it just happened to be the default for this customer’s server.
